‘THE FOREST’ TRAILER REVIEW BY METRO CREW

When her twin sister goes missing in Japan, Sara (Natalie Dormer) tries to find her, following the trail into Aokigahara, dubbed “The Suicide Forest.” Sara must navigate her way through Aokigahara while encountering supernatural forces. The Forest looks creepy – but we think it seems too predictable. The Forest opens in wide release Jan. 8.

JAMES: This looks like another trashy horror flick, but the sad reality is that Aokigahara – “The Suicide Forest”- is a real place in Japan. There’s even a sign that at the trailhead urging people to consider their families and to seek professional help. I wonder if this movie just uses that as a convenient horror backdrop, or if there’s actually a storyline.

PAIGE: Aokigahara is known for its abnormally high suicide rate, so I’m pretty sure a movie like this is only going to popularize it and cause more people to go and commit suicide there. So that’s great. I wonder if they filmed this movie in the real Aokigahara? That would be commitment.

NICOLE: I saw this trailer at home, and it scared the crap out of me because my grandparents used to tell me about Aokigahara. I just assumed it was one of those urban legends, and I didn’t look any further into it because I’m a scaredy cat. It’s kind of like the legend that spirits that are in a state of unrest that cannot join their ancestors await humans to go into the sea (or forest, in this case) and take over a human body. I think that her sister is actually crazy, and she’s luring her twin sister into the forest to take over her body.

PAIGE: I don’t like seeing Natalie Dormer in this kind of role. She is regal and wonderful, and she should only be characters of weight, like Anne Boleyn, or Margaery Tyrell, or Irene Adler. She should not be the screaming maiden at the whim of cheap horror. She should be starring in some of the best horror movies on Netflix instead. She’s a great actress.

CHRISTINA: Maybe I am just a wuss, but I think that this looks better than your run-of-the-mill horror movie. The woman alone in the forest, the creatures looming around her. I think it looks pretty terrifying.

PAIGE: I’m sure the fact that this movie is about twins is going to come into play. Was it all a dream? Was she actually insane? Does she have split personalities? Twins are always portrayed as creepy.

CHRISTINA: That is what I am thinking – that she actually is crazy and never had a sister, or that something tragic happened to her sister when they were young. The very fact that we are already thinking that speaks to how overdone twists like that are in horror movies. But maybe it will be something completely different and surprise us.

NICOLE: I would watch it only to see what the outcome is. Just kidding, someone else watch it and tell me about the ending.

JAMES: I bet it will be revealed that her twin sister died during childhood, and that it’s always haunted her. This affliction leads to psychosis, which then leads her to the forest, which then leads to special effects-laden hallucinations and jump cuts and whispers in the wind type of stuff. Finally, her twin will erupt out of the soil and say, “Hey! It’s okay! I’m in a good place. Lead your life! There’s a pretty nice gift shop a few miles from here.”
