We’re pretty big Ed Kenney fans here at Metro, as astute readers may have noticed, so why we haven’t talked more about Kaimuki Superette is a little baffling to us, too. We’re especially big on this pork sausage toasted into the most decadent little sandwich ever, with ricotta and choy sum on crispy focaccia bread. The real fun of Kaimuki Superette, though, is getting some of those colorful antipasti along with your order. The extra cost is so worth it. We tried quinoa and earthy roasted roots for a delicious, healthy supplement to our rich sandwich.

DOUBLE BERRY & WHIP CREAM WAFFLES

MANGO DAYS AT HONOLULU

OK, so we’re aware that Mango Days specializes in, you know, mangoes. But they weren’t in season when we went, and the owner even recommended against ordering them! So we went with these simple berry waffles instead. It’s basic, but it’s done right. The waffles were light and crispy; the whipped cream was fluffy and abundant. The berries were sweet and made us feel (moderately) healthy. It’s mostly self-serve here, but the wait for your food can be pretty long — when we were there, there were just two employees on site. At least the charming décor offers plenty to look at while you wait. (You might wait a long time.)
