‘INHERENT VICE’ TRAILER REVIEW BY METRO CREW

Because the trailer has got too many moving parts to neatly sum up, here’s what IMDB says Inherent Vice is about: In 1970, drug-fueled Los Angeles detective Larry “Doc” Sportello (Joaquin Phoenix) investigates the disappearance of a former girlfriend. Beyond that, we’re not really sure what’s going on, but that doesn’t mean we don’t like it. Directed by Paul Thomas Anderson and also starring Katherine Waterston, Josh Brolin, Benicio del Toro, Reese Witherspoon and Owen Wilson, Inherent Vice looks like a fun, if a bit trippy, ride. Inherent Vice opens Jan. 9 at Kahala Theatre. >>

NICOLE: I want to watch this so badly!

CHRISTINA: I was trying to think of what else Paul Thomas Anderson has done.

JAMES: He did The Master with Joaquin Phoenix. He did Boogie Nights. Magnolia. Punch Drunk Love. There Will Be Blood.

NICOLE: I love Reese Witherspoon, and I love Joaquin Phoenix. And when the gurney falls … Haha!

JAMES: There’s a lot of sight gags. I think that one thing that they are trying to emulate is those movies with slapstick comedy, like Airplane! and The Naked Gun.

PAIGE: I liked (Josh Brolin’s) Japanese. It was really quality Japanese.

NICOLE: What was he saying?

PAIGE: “More pancakes.” But his accent was so bad that it took a moment to piece it together.

CHRISTINA: It looks good. It looks funny. I’d see it.

PAIGE: This reminded me a lot of American Hustle, at least visually. That’s the kind of vibe I got from it. But I am just going off of the trailers and Bradley Cooper’s perm.

CHRISTINA: I feel like the plot in the trailer isn’t super clear, though. Maybe they just glazed over it very quickly and there is a lot going on.

JAMES: I have been reading reviews that the plot is really convoluted. It’s really just more about the style of the movie.

JAIMIE: And the people in it.

CHRISTINA: I don’t really like that, though. Even if a movie’s style is cool and it has good actors, I still think it needs a pretty solid plot in order to be interesting.

NICOLE: I don’t feel that way. I usually watch things when I am super hammered, that’s why.

JAMES: So then everything makes sense.

NICOLE: That is why I like to watch shows like Family Guy where there is no real plot and it jumps around. This looks like the perfect movie to watch when you’re inebriated.

CHRISTINA: Maybe that is my problem. I can’t remember the last time I saw a movie while I was drunk. I should do that more often.

JAIMIE: When I am drunk and I watch movies, I just fall asleep.

NICOLE: Maybe, then, you’re at the point where you’re drinking too much.
