Letter From The Editor

Metro-090215-editorDonna Blanchard believed in the mission of Kumu Kahua Theatre so much that she moved to Honolulu from Indiana to take a job as the theater’s managing director — without ever having been here before or even knowing anyone.

It was a leap she was willing to take because she was looking for a venue that emphasized the importance of place in its productions — and Kumu Kahua was the only one she could find. This niche is what you will find at the theater: plays set here, penned by writers with Hawaii ties.

Last week, Kumu Kahua kicked off its 45th season with a play by Yilong Liu, a graduate student at UH. See more about the theater and Liu’s play in this week’s feature story.

Also this week, Joanna Bressler shares one unfortunate scenario that everyone here in Hawaii will find familiar: encountering a centipede. Bressler is a writer and editor who tells her story in our Shared Space section, which accepts submissions of personal essays, fiction and poetry. Read more here.

And Anton Glamb is back in town after a trip to the East Coast. See what he thinks about his homecoming.
