Letter From The Editor

Metro-081915-editorHere’s some news: animator Don Hertzfeldt has a new film out called World of Tomorrow, and in true Hertzfeldt fashion, it’s darkly humorous, teetering on existential — but in a charming way.

You’ve probably seen his work even if you don’t know it: He’s the weird genius behind those Rejected cartoons that circulated the Internet in the early 2000s and were, by my estimation at least, among the first viral videos. (Think, “my spoon is too big,” “I’m a banana” and other catchphrases I can’t repeat here.)

Anyway, you can catch his latest film on the big screen at Honolulu Museum of Art’s Doris Duke Theatre, along with a collection of five others, for the 2015 Sundance Film Festival Short Film Tour. The screening is part of a more expansive partnership between the museum and Sundance Institute that is in the works. You can read more about that and the films here.

I know talking about the weather is boring, but for real, it has been so hot lately. But we’re sure you still want to get outside. If you’re doing so with furry friends in tow, Caitlin Basilio chatted with a couple vets to get some tips on hiking with dogs. See what they’ve got to say here.

Last week, photographer Anthony Consillio stopped by POW! WOW! School of Music’s summer showcase. The event doubled as a fundraiser for Christa Wittmier (Metro columnist/marketing guru/all-around amazing woman), who is working to kick cancer’s ass. We love CW and wish her a full and speedy recovery. There have been a string of other fundraisers throughout town to help her pay for her medical bills.
