Letter From The Editor

Metro-042215-editorIn celebration of Earth Day April 22, we chatted with Kanu Hawaii, a local nonprofit with a multi-faceted mission to tackle a myriad of issues involving energy, food, waste and the community.

As Kanu board member Karen Shishido explains it: “We see everything as connected, and we see all these problems and solutions as interlinked.”

Although its goals may be broad, the structure of the organization is almost pared down in a way: Kanu focuses on reaching out to individuals and starting change there. It’s a nice reminder for Earth Day — that each person actually can have an impact. For more on Kanu, see Page 10.

If you’re looking for ways to get outside more, read about what 808 Sports Leagues has to offer on Page 12. The group provides opportunities for casual team sports after work, and it’s currently accepting registration for its summer flag football season.

Even our tech columnist Christa Wittmier reminds us this week that it’s good to unplug every now and then. Check out her musings on Page 7.
