Letter From The Editor

Metro-Christina-MugMost things that circulate widely on the Internet tend to be, well, somewhat trivial. Don’t get me wrong, I love a good cat video just as much as (OK, more than) the next person, but last week, it was nice to see droves of people advocating for social justice on social media through hashtags like #CrimingWhileWhite and #Alive-While Black.

Also making the Internet rounds last week was the #GivingTuesday campaign, which took place around the world Dec. 2. Now in its third year, #GivingTuesday is a global day that celebrates charitable giving. Nonprofits utilize the day as a way to raise awareness and funds for their causes. In this issue, we take a look at how local nonprofit Honolulu Community Action Program celebrated the occasion (Page 12).

If you missed #GivingTuesday but still want to help out a local charity, Make-A-Wish Hawaii hosts its second annual Jingle Rock Run Dec. 21. For details, see the story on Page 14. Plus, it looks like The Republik is getting in on all of this giving, with a couple of free shows coming up. Read more in our On The Grid events calendar on Page 6.
