Letter from the Editor

Metro-Christina-MugI have to admit, my version of cooking is basically just throwing a bunch of vegetables in a pot of couscous or over pasta. (I’m not a vegetarian, I just don’t cook with meat or fish due to a likely exaggerated fear that I will accidentally give myself food poisoning by undercooking it. As a result, I end up overcooking meat and fish. As a result of that, I eat a lot of kale.) I have about three dinner dishes I rotate every few weeks.

It does get boring.

That is why I was so excited when I heard about fresh BOX, a local company that delivers ingredients and instructions for three meals (three meals of three separate dishes). That means that you don’t have to go to the store — and, for people like me who hardly know any recipes, this sounds perfect. (Another reason I don’t cook much is because oftentimes, the ingredients I buy get old before I can use them all; I’ve long thought that food packagers discriminate against single people. With everything ready to go inside each fresh BOX, you won’t face that problem here.)

In our feature story on Page 10, food writer Jaimie Kim takes a closer look into fresh BOX, talking with the owners and trying out the service for herself.

We’re all about wellness in this issue. And as Christa Wittmier reminds us on Page 8, in addition to eating healthy, we also have to ensure our brains are well-fed — and she gives us a couple of apps that are designed to do that.
