SEARED DAY BOAT SCALLOPS
LE BISTRO
5730 Kalanianaole Hwy., Hawaii Kai
Phone number (808) 373-7990

Regardless of how fancy (or not fancy) a restaurant is, scallops are pretty much always served the same way: seared with a nice sauce. But hey, why mess with what works? Le Bistro’s take on the formula includes big, soft scallops with bacon, vegetables and the world’s greatest potato gratin. You may think creamy potatoes do not match the simplicity of scallops, but you would be very wrong indeed. In any case, we’re still trying to find a dish at Le Bistro that isn’t absolutely amazing …

PANNA COTTA
BREAD+BUTTER
1585 Kapiolani Blvd., Honolulu
Phone number (808) 949-3430

We’re big panna cotta fans here at Metro, so Bread+Butter’s take on the classic dessert was pretty interesting — it added apples to the traditional berry adornments. And we’re going to be completely honest with you: Apples are very weird on panna cotta. It’s not a fruit that inherently goes with creamy textures unless it’s been dusted with cinnamon and baked into a gooey pie. We probably wouldn’t get it again. Note that all of Bread+Butter’s desserts are off-menu, so inquire if you want to try something.
