The Sky Is The Limit

Metro-021916-BarkeepYou know those places you see on Instagram that make you think I really need to get there? (I’m not the only one who finds new places to check out on Instagram, right?)

It seems I have a whole list of places I’ve been wanting to go to, but I keep revisiting my favorite haunts. This past weekend, I decided to turn all that around and start at the top of my unvisited list. First up? SKY Waikiki. Located one level below Top of Waikiki at 2270 Kalakaua Ave., SKY offers panoramic views of downtown Waikiki, as well as a peekaboo ocean view, and is hands down the best place to see the Friday-night fireworks.

When I got to the rooftop terrace, there was a plethora of couches and tables, but none were open seating, so I chose a high-top table. This ended up working in my favor, as it was close to the bar and live music.

The drink menu is small but delicious. I began with a Pineapple Gangster (pictured, right), an infusion of vodka, Amaro Montenegro, pineapple and lime juices with egg whites, and topped with grated cinnamon. It’s a refreshing treat. It arrived larger than I anticipated, but not quite as strong as I had hoped. What I loved most was that I could tell the fruit juices were fresh — a definite boozy bonus!

I kept seeing ladies carrying around what appeared to be Bellinis, so I inquired about getting one for myself. Turns out it was an Aperol Spritz, a mix of Aperol, prosecco and seltzer. I wasn’t over-the-top on t hat concoction, so the bartender told me he would “hook me up.” I think that was code for “here’s a party for your mouth!” He somehow managed to include all my favorite flavors in one drink by mixing POG juice, pineapple juice and champagne together, with a lime on the side. There is no official name for it, but rest assured, the custom-made drink was delicious — and it met my criteria for heavy pouring.

My husband sipped a Seaside Sling (pictured, left), a merger of Bombay gin, Cocchi Americano, pear liqueur and Tahitian lime bitters. He said the drink itself was strong and delicious, but the best part was the blue cheese-stuffed olive.

If you plan to head to SKY, I recommend arriving early and snagging a seat around the fire pit, as I was surprised by how chilly I got. And don’t forget to have your parking comped by the bartender. Oh, and also — give me a call, I’m still dreaming about my custom cocktail.
