An exhibit depicting the work of self-taught Japanese woodblock print designer Nakagami Masanosuke (better known by his artist name Ogata Gekko) debuts Oct. 1 and runs through Nov. 29 at Honolulu Museum of Art. He was among the first to attain international recognition for the art form — and had displayed his work in wide-reaching cities including London, Paris and Chicago.

According to the museum, while Gekko primarily was noted for his depiction of war, this collection highlights his work in bijinga (portraits of beautiful women).
