Letter From The Editor

Metro-112015-editor

I imagine that at most Thanksgiving gatherings happening this week, football will be an integral aspect. Football fanaticism is something that is entirely commonplace — and its virtual iteration has long been widely so as well.

As Paige Takeya states in this week’s feature story, there are more than 40 million fantasy football “team owners,” as they call themselves. And each week, these millions feel the losses and the wins along with the real teams. Paige introduces us to a few local fanatics — one of whom even has built his own service through which he manages several leagues. It’s a fascinating look at a subculture of a subculture.

If football isn’t quite enough to help you power through an all-day holiday get-together, columnist Kait Hanson’s got you covered. She shares three different recipes for apple-flavored drinks that are suitable for morning, afternoon and evening. They all sound incredibly tasty, and I’m sure we’ll be thanking her later.

On another note, it goes without saying that what happened in Paris was horrific and heartbreaking. For an insightful reflection of the intersection of disaster and technology, see tech columnist Christa Wittmier’s latest. (And speaking of Christa, see details about her official fundraiser taking place at Nov. 27 at Nextdoor in Roger Bong’s column.) Plus, there’s more on the topic in a poem by Jason Walter in our Shared Space section.
