Letter From The Editor

Metro-050615-editorWhen I called up John Henderson, founder of NiteRun, I thought it would be a quick phone call about how the race got started and why. But as the conversation unfolded, I was in complete awe — not only about how the race got started and why, but more so of Henderson himself.

Henderson truly cares about putting on a fun race — and about helping local nonprofits and schools in the process — even though he can’t run in it. Henderson’s been paralyzed from the waist down since he was hit by a bus a few years ago. He created NiteRun, he says, for everyone else — the participants and the organizations he partners with.

I had participated in the first NiteRun back in 2013 — and had a blast — but I had no idea about the story, or the man, behind it. Read more in our feature story on Page 10. The next NiteRun comes to Kakaako May 23.

Also in this issue, you can find more on food writer Jaimie Kim’s journey into some of the island’s best pho restaurants — as recommended by our readers. This week, she visits Pho Huong Lan on the suggestion of Wynnie in Mililani. Wynnie loves this place. See what Jaimie has to say about it on Page 14.

Finally, if you missed the event itself, check out Tony Grillo’s photos from the most recent 80s Pop Muzik at Bar 35. DJ Nocturna and Lana Saldania were joined by special guest Taimane Gardner.
