TWIST-LOVING DIRECTOR RETURNS

Metro-090915-TrailerReview

Siblings Rebecca and Tyler are excited to spend a week with their grandparents whom they’ve never met — but the trip quickly goes awry when the elderly couple acts increasingly strange. As the kids try to figure out what’s wrong with their grandparents, they discover a shocking secret. The latest film by writer/director M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense), the film is said to include one of his classic twists. The trailer sets up an interesting premise, but we’re not sure if it can successfully balance horror and comedy. The Visit opens in wide release Sept. 11.

NICOLE: I’m not sure how I feel about comedic horrors. I’m torn because I live for comedies, but I also cannot watch scary movies. I get nightmares for WEEKS! I have to shower in the morning because showering at night is too scary.

CHRISTINA: I am interested in seeing this, actually. I enjoy horror movies/horror comedies like Scream, and this looks like it has a pretty interesting mystery. Like, I have to know what happens and what is wrong with the grandparents.

NICOLE: I’m not sure how I feel about it. Because, one, where the hell is the comedy? And two, WHERE THE HELL IS THE COMEDY? Let me know what’s wrong with the grandparents. I do want to know. I just don’t want to pay to almost pee my pants.

CHRISTINA: I thought the part where she’s like, “Can you climb into the oven to clean it?” was pretty funny. But I agree with Nicole — it looks really scary! There are a few scenes that look fairly visually disturbing — like when the grandma is clawing at the door.

PAIGE: Since children are all used up as evil’s preferred harbinger of doom, we now move toward … old people? For some reason, that’s kind of hilarious. I literally cannot get over that. I want to laugh when the little kids are crying.

NICOLE: Paige, what the heck is wrong with you — laughing at the pain and suffering of children? And grandparents are supposed to be wonderful beings who spoil you!

JAIMIE: I am torn between feeling afraid — because grandparents are supposed to be all nice and sedentary — and laughing, because seriously, what just happened? I guess the concept could have been scary, I mean, it really is when you think about it. I don’t want to think about my grandma chasing after me with knives and throwing me into the oven. But, I dunno. I feel like lately, M. Night Shyamalan has just been TERRIBLE. He seriously ruined The Last Airbender and for that, I can NEVER forgive him.

JAMES: I’m actually kind of curious as to how Shyamalan would handle the found footage genre. His camera work is super deliberate. And now, the story is at the mercy of a couple of teenagers and their own compositional skills. Maybe that’s the twist ending. One of the siblings turns out to be M. Night Shyamalan.
