Sequel Looks Really, Really Ridiculous

Metro-021216-TrailerReview‘ZOOLANDER 2′ TRAILER REVIEW BY METRO CREW

Having become estranged in the 15 years since the first film, now-washed up male models Derek Zoolander and Hansel are reunited when they discover a conspiracy to kill the world’s most beautiful people. We’re excited simply because we all love the original — who doesn’t? — but we’re not sure how good this actually looks.

Zoolander 2 opens in wide release Feb. 12.

CHRISTINA: I am excited for this simply because it’s Zoolander. The original was probably one of the best comedies ever. OK, not to say it’s a great movie, but I just love it. I don’t even usually like comedies, but Zoolander is hilarious. Even though this trailer doesn’t look fantastic, I will definitely see the movie.

NICOLE: I really think that Zoolander 2 will be even more glorious. The first time that I saw Zoolander in theaters, I thought it was the stupidest movie in the world. But for some reason, I watched it again … and again and again and again. I must have seen the first movie 30 times — no joke.

PAIGE: My favorite part of Zoolander is the Derek Zoolander School for Kids Who Can’t Read Good and Want to Do Other Stuff Good Too. I thought that was where he was retiring at the end of the last film, knowing as he does in his dim way that beauty is ephemeral, and his time as the most beautiful male model in the world is over. So, that seems like a bad sign already.

NICOLE: I hope they break-dance fight again AND have an intense walk-off.

CHRISTINA: My favorite part of the first one was probably the freak gasoline fight accident. But I think all of our expectations based on the original could get in the way of enjoying this movie for whatever it is on its own. And therein lies the problem with sequels in general.

NICOLE: I take joy in stupid movies that are ridiculous for ridiculousness’ sake.

PAIGE: It is nice to see Ben Stiller once again fully committed to stupidity, especially after his kinda lameNight at the Museum streak and his recent serious roles.

CHRISTINA:That part where Owen Wilson was throwing things at him was hilarious! I was literally lol-ing then.

PAIGE: You gotta give Benedict Cumberbatch credit for his willingness to take on roles in both prestige pictures and … this. Whatever he is here.

CHRISTINA: People are boycotting the movie because of it. It’s similar to the Dallas Buyers Club issue with Jared Leto — where people are saying there should be a trans actor portraying a trans character. The Cumberbatch character looks to me like it could have sort of a mocking tone.

PAIGE: Not to rain on the parade, as I do genuinely enjoy the stupidity of Zoolander, but I think my favorite of Stiller’s movies is Tropic Thunder, mostly because it actually is a fairly sharp satire in addition to being an intensely, devotedly stupid film. Zoolander 2doesn’t quite look like it is satirizing nearly as much as even the first film did. It just looks like … a money grab. There, I said it. Gosh.
