Let’s Get Social

Metro-040815-Barkeep-TheSocialiteInstagram made me do it. One delicious photo led to another, and before I knew it, my photo-stalking thirst led me to The Social Honolulu Eatery & Bar.

The Social posts mouth-watering photos of original dishes such as Spicy Pork Quesadillas and Seared Foie Gras with yuzu butterscotch glaze. But the cocktail photos were the real reason I was drawn to the McCully establishment.

The Social has a welcoming atmosphere, with ample lounge space, soft music and four dartboards.

The first cocktail I ordered was the Strawberry Blonde, containing Buffalo Trace bourbon, Belle de Brillet pear liqueur, fresh lime juice, ginger beer and a strawberry garnish. At $14, it’s on the more expensive side, but it’s worth the money. Usually, I find that pricey cocktails have less alcohol than cheaper ones, yet the Strawberry Blonde surprised me with its intense bourbon flavor. Even if you’re not a bourbon fan, I still recommend this drink; the sweetness from the pear liqueur balances the spiciness from the ginger and bourbon.

Next, I ordered The Socialite (pictured). On Instagram, it is described as the “signature drink” with Gentleman’s Jack, Torani peach syrup, fresh lemon sour, Peychaud’s bitters and a mint garnish. The Social-ite is the perfect balance of sweet and smoky; the flavors combine harmoniously with each sip and are smooth on the palate. (I was happy to learn that my favorite cocktail was the cheapest on The Social’s menu — it’s $10 — because that means I can come back and order a few rounds.)

Lastly, I decided on the Sage Lime Sour because I had never tried a drink with sage. It also contains Cazdores Blanco, Lillet Rose, Gallianiano and lime sour. But the smell of tequila was so strong that my stomach turned and just one sip made me feel as though I was drinking tequila muddled with salt water (from the rim). My friend, however, loved the drink and finished my leftovers.

The Social also has well drinks and beers on tap. It just opened in mid-March, and I predict great things in the future. Next time you’re in the McCully area, go get Social. Until then, check out its tempting Instagram photos at @thesocialhnl.
