Howl at the Moon(Shine)

I have a confession: I have never been a huge fan of Halloween. I don’t like being scared, so watching scary movies or going to haunted houses was always out of the question.

But once I turned 21, it became customary to dress up and head out to the bar for a night of costumed debauchery. Now THAT was something I could get on board with.

This year, I’m going to two costume parties and instead of bringing some food to share, I intend to bring a potent potion I created, made with 100-proof Hawaiian Moonshine.

Island Distillers, makers of Okolehao Hawaiian Moonshine, was started by Dave Flintstone, who figured he could utilize Hawaii’s natural resources and climate to concoct spirits. These days, Dave and his team produce handcrafted vodka, coconut vodka and moonshine — and boast numerous placements on the menus of some of Honolulu’s most popular bars. A forthcoming expansion in Hawaii Kai will provide the setting for an innovative line of rums, liqueurs and other spirits that currently are in the works.

Crafted from ti leaf roots and introduced in 1790, okolehao was enjoyed by royalty in ancient Hawaii. After sampling the smooth taste, I knew I needed to bring it into my own kitchen!

TO RECREATE MY POTENT POMEGRANATE POTION, YOU WILL NEED:

2 oz. Okolehao Hawaiian Moonshine

2 oz. Triple Sec

5 oz. Pomegranate juice Splash of IZZE Sparkling Clementine

1. Pour ingredients into a shaker filled with ice.

2. Shake well.

3. Pour into a glass, garnish and enjoy!

I love this cocktail recipe, but okolehao also is delicious mixed with lemon-lime soda or straight up with a lime wedge. Even for those who are not so thrilled with the holiday, a bottle of this will ensure that you have a devilishly good Halloween!
