Happy Hour At Jose’s
There are very few things I like more than a good margarita. Considering I’m always game for Mexican food, this works out pretty perfectly when it comes to picking places to eat. I’ve been dying to try Jose’s Mexican Cafe & Cantina at 1134 Koko Head Ave. for quite some time, so when my husband suggested we head there after a hike, I was game!
When we arrived and found out it was happy hour, I opted for the cantina portion of the menu instead of the cafe. The homemade corn chips and salsa on the table were plenty for me.
Jose’s offers happy hour from 3 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, which is a perfect time to take advantage of its deals on margaritas. Or, if you’re a beer lover, you can grab both domestic and imported brews at discounted prices.
I went straight for the tequila — specifically the Back Bar Margarita, an infusion of Cuervo Gold, Cointreau, OJ and Grand Marnier. I opted for the medium size. It seemed like a safe option because I never know what I’m getting into with happy hour margaritas — you can either hit a home run or strike out entirely. Let’s just say that after one sip, I was ready to run the bases. I had never tried this combination before, but I loved the refreshing, citrus taste. I also was impressed that, for a happy hour cocktail, there was a substantial amount of liquor in my drink.
Jose’s offers an impressive list of house margaritas, but you can also create your own from their list of fruit flavors, which includes banana, strawberry, peach, pineapple, mango and pomegranate. So for my second drink, I ordered the pineapple margarita. I didn’t think of it at the time, but when I return, I’ll be mixing strawberry and pineapple. Next time, I’ll also be upgrading my tequila selection. The distinctive bitter taste of well tequila is undeniable, even when mixed with delicious pineapple flavoring.
I can’t speak for the food at Jose’s (though the free chips and salsa were a nice snack!), but the drinks definitely hit the spot on both taste and price. Happy hour is a can’t miss at this cantina.
