From Formaggio With Love

Metro-021115-Barkeep2

Valentine’s Day is nearing. It’s unavoidable, whether you’re single or in a relationship. Recently, GALentine’s Day also has become a trend for single women.

While many may argue about the validity of this holiday, I think it can be agreed that wine will be a good choice on Feb. 14, and I wouldn’t be surprised if many of you decided to head to the store at somewhere like Wine Access (https://www.wineaccess.com/store/) to ensure that you have the best wine at your disposal for this truly special day. But if you’re looking to do something else for this occasion, look no further than Formaggio Wine Bar in Market City. And if you’ve already made plans, cancel them, because Formaggio is wine heaven.

From outside, this wine bar constantly looks closed because of its black-tinted windows. But don’t worry; it’s open nightly. Upon entry, you’re transported from the grimy Market City parking lot into a dimly lit, romantic dining room. There are candlelit tables for more intimate dining and a bar for those wanting to get up close and personal with the alcohol.

Formaggio has more than 10 wines on tap, ranging from California to Italy to New Zealand. During happy hour, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., five different wines are offered at $5, as well as a small selection of food.

My recent visit consisted of tasting a few wines, and my recommendations are as follows: Di Majo Norante Cabernet for its soft and fruity flavors, Poggio Chi-anti for its richness, and the overall winner, Secco Bertani Ripasso for its smoothness.

I am not a white wine drinker, but for those of you who are, the bartender recommended the Babich Savingon Blanc Black Label from New Zealand.

Although some of us might be content with a few bottles of wine sans a meal, Valentine’s Day probably would not be complete without a little food. The Fonduta (pictured) is a must; it’s served with crostini for dipping and is loaded with artichokes, spinach and crabmeat.

Bring your significant other, friends or ride solo. No matter the situation, love will be in the air. Well, at least wine will be there.
