DRINKS

To give us a taste of what its bar has to offer, Holoholo Bar & Grill served up three signature cocktails. All were tasty and had just the right amount of sweetness.

DA MANGO AND DA MINT

A Pidgin play on words, this drink is fashioned after a mojito made with my favorite fruit: mangos. Push the mint further into your drink for some added spice.

MADE WITH: Ketel One Vodka, Finest Call Mango Puree, Cointreau, fresh lime and mint

HOLOHOLO JUICE

You might not be able to taste the alcohol in this one because of bright citrus flavors that stand out. This is only a bad thing if you lose track of how many you’ve had.

MADE WITH: Southern Comfort, Midori, Amaretto, Vodka, pineapple and cranberry

LYCHEE LEMONADE

When I think of lychee, I think of all things right in this world. Such is the case with this cocktail that celebrates the fruit even when you can’t get it from someone’s backyard.

MADE WITH: ThreeOlives Citrus, Bols Lychee Liqueur, Finest Call Lemon Sour and soda water

MACARONS CAKE WORKS

website cakeworkshi.com

This staple of Eat the Street events (with a permanent location near UH Manoa) is always selling one or a dozen flavors of brightly colored macarons in addition to more customary cakes, cupcakes and desserts. These macarons are chewier, tarter and firmer than other island options, so they have a more cookie-like feel to them. Flavor options include standards like red velvet, guava and chocolate, as well as more unusual types such as blue Hawaii, apple and salted caramel. On one very memorable occasion, we did see a salmon-flavored one. (… We did not try that one.)

RICOTTA PANCAKES BILLS HAWAII

Pancakes are the breakfast staple that no one really messes with — because pancakes are pancakes, right? But Bills Waikiki does tamper with the sacred formula, to very tasty effect, by adding ricotta cheese into the mix. The result is a dense (but somehow not heavy) pancake with a saltier kick, served with bananas, honeycomb butter and syrup. Make sure each bite is taken with some banana for optimal flavor balance. Protip: Go with a friend, and order pancakes and the Aussie breakfast to share. It’ll be the best of both worlds.
