SPICY AHI & CREAMY SALMON

There’s an abundance of things to eat in Shirokiya, but this sushi bar is a gem. The best of their many fishy offerings is this combination of ahi and salmon poke. The “spicy” moniker is a bit misleading, as this is more akin to ahi limu poke. But the creamy salmon — which mixes salmon with a light mayo and tobiko — is as tasty as its name implies. You can bring food (or drinks) from other sections in Shirokiya to supplement your meal, and the setting is just bustling enough to eat alone with no shame. (How do we know that? No reason …)

It’s a staple of fundraisers across the island, but there’s an advantage in going straight to the source for your ice cream fix. For one thing, the choices: You won’t find the more exotic flavors like sakura and li hing mango in those ubiquitous boxes. Plus, the more you buy, the cheaper they get. If you, for some ludicrous reason, do not like your ice cream encased in chewy mochi, then you can get a slice of one of Bubbies’ delightfully named ice cream cakes instead.
