Family law attorney Katra Cuskaden and community development specialist Alison Lum have teamed up to create their own business, Rollerball Remedies Hawaii, which offers essential oils designed to do everything from treat breathing issues to boost immunity. It’s a brand-new venture that will be unveiled at the New Baby Expo, held 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 16-17 at Neal Blaisdell Exhibition Hall.

For both women, their skill in essential oils has been a hard-earned knowledge.

Cuskaden noticed that her 4-year-old daughter Ireland van der Pyl had breathing problems from the time she was just an infant. Ireland had a wheeze, which was exacerbated when she had a cold or even just a runny nose.

“She would wake up with a wheeze in her chest and cough nonstop all night. She basically refused to sleep”, Cuskaden reflects. She’d have to skip school and gymnastics because if she ran around too much, the wheeze would start, and she’d be unable to breathe. It was heartbreaking to see her like that after she had spent so much time enjoying her Gymnastics training.

So life for Cuskaden and Ireland became a barrage of sleepless nights and doctor visits – and when things got really bad, trips to the emergency room. To help her breathing, doctors put Ireland on a nebulizer, which made medicine into a steam that she inhaled through a mask. But it wasn’t a perfect solution: She had to wear the mask for two weeks out of the month, and at times, Cuskaden had to wake Ireland up every two hours to give her the medicine.

Cuskaden was beginning to feel desperate. “It was this horrible, helpless feeling,” she says.

She vented her concerns to Lum, whose daughter was in preschool with Ireland. Lum, it turned out, had had struggles of her own: Her infant son had digestive problems. But she found essential oils helped.

“It really soothed him, and it immediately alleviated any type of abdominal pain that he had,” Lum explains.

So she shared the solution with Cuskaden, who was initially skeptical – nothing else had worked, why would this be different? But she tried it anyway, rubbing oils that were supposed to treat coughs on the bottoms of Ireland’s feet. To Cuskaden’s surprise, almost immediately, Ireland was coughing less and less.

But one of Ireland’s main triggers was the vog. To address that, Cuskaden and Lum began doing their own research and concocted a remedy to treated vog-related symptoms. Soon, the pair was creating recipes utilizing pure essential oils to treat varied issues such as sleeping problems, flu symptoms, skin allergies, bruises, teething, itching, upset stomachs and more.

It wasn’t enough for Cuskaden and Lum to have this cure for their own families – they wanted to share it. With Rollerball Remedies, they hope they can provide others with natural solutions. To expand the young business’ reach, they’re currently seeking retail locations and plan to have an online shop set up soon.

“We just had so many successes, and for a mom, that is such a comfort to be able to help your children immediately,” Lum says. “We saw the potential of helping to empower other moms and giving them natural options to take more control over their children’s health.”

“Since I started using (essential oils) in November, Ireland hasn’t had a cold, hasn’t had a cough, we haven’t had to use the nebulizer, and I haven’t had to go see her pediatrician,” Cuskaden says. (All of that is more incredible considering that Ireland is in preschool – which Cuskaden jokes is a “germ farm.”)

Ireland certainly has been happy with the outcomes, too. While Cuskaden used to have to limit her physical activity, Ireland now can run around as much as any other kid.

“Even if I help just one person the way Alison helped me and Ireland, I would be happy with that,” Cuskaden says. “It just changed my life and Ireland’s tremendously for the better.”
