De Niro Gets ‘Dirty’

Metro-012215-TrailerReview‘DIRTY GRANDPA’ TRAILER REVIEW BY METRO CREW

Dick (Robert De Niro) cons his straight-laced, uptight grandson Jason (Zac Efron) into taking a road trip to Daytona for spring break. De Niro’s looking to hook up with college girls, while Jason just wants to make it back home to his controlling girlfriend. While this movie is probably fairly predictable, we kind of want to see it, perhaps despite our better judgement. The De Niro/Efron pairing seems to work, and Aubrey Plaza looks hilarious as a spring breaker pursuing De Niro. Dirty Grandpa opens in wide release Jan. 22.

JAIMIE: There’s something about this movie that kind of makes me want to watch it. Not in theaters, I wouldn’t pay for it, but certainly if it were on TV, I would stop to watch it. I usually find it upsetting to see Robert De Niro doing comedy because he used to be such a badass, but he’s kind of endearing in this one. Even Zac Efron looks manageable.

CHRISTINA: I feel like I can predict how this is going to end: After fighting it through most of the movie, the uptight Zac Efron ultimately will reach some sort of epiphany about enjoying life.

NICOLE: Good advice from Dirty Grandpa is that Zac Efron’s girlfriend is a *bleep*. I have a soft spot in my heart for old people, and when said old people are vulgar and rude, I love them even more.

PAIGE: For some reason, this movie speaks to me on a deeper level, and I am not entirely clear why. Robert De Niro, just flat-out saying “F*!% IT” and selling out with zero reservations? Zac Efron, embracing that his lot in life is to be hot and do embarrassing things? I technically should like none of this movie and instead I am irrepressibly amused. In fairness, I find all The Hangover movies terribly amusing as well. And Wet Hot American Summer is my comedic nirvana. I feel like this is in a similar vein.

JAIMIE: I would like to note that it will take the rest of my life to erase that clip, however brief, of Aubrey Plaza getting it on with Robert De Niro. I am pretty sure she is the same age as me, and Robert De Niro could basically be my grandpa, so………

CHRISTINA: I’m not sure how to say this without sounding weird or creepy, but I would definitely want to see that Aubrey Plaza/Robert De Niro sex scene. Her delivery of those pickup lines is hilarious.

PAIGE: ‘I WANT YOU TO RIP MY BRA OPEN LIKE IT WAS A SOCIAL SECURITY CHECK.’

NICOLE: I want to know her motivation for getting with him. Is it because he’s rich? Is it because she’s super messed up on drugs? Is she just living life to the fullest?

JAIMIE: I must say, though, that all the pregnancy jokes were disturbing. Like, no, I do not want to party until I get pregnant. That would be the worst kind of party. Ever. Is that something kids are saying now? Is this what adulthood feels like? Confusion over what crazy young people are saying?

PAIGE: But seriously, Zac Efron is on fire here.

JAIMIE: He is kind of attractive, but he’s just TOO MUCH. In a way that makes him unattractive to me.

CHRISTINA: I am a fan, but I’m not entirely sure why … His roles seem to just be “frat bro” and “overgrown frat bro” and “would-be frat bro” as the case may be here.

PAIGE: Hey, the man has found his niche. Some actors go their whole lives without finding their niche.
