Daniel Craig Reprises Bond Role

Metro-110615-TrailerReview

As the latest installment of the Daniel Craig James Bond run, Spectre opens with Bond chasing a criminal through Mexico City and Rome on a rogue mission. Following a lead on a cryptic message, Bond discovers the existence of an organization called SPECTRE and must find out the truth behind it. While it seems that Bond fans will enjoy this one regardless, it may be less appealing to the uninitiated. Spectre opens in wide release Nov. 6.

PAIGE: This movie is going to be so great. I’m so excited. I’m getting excited seeing this trailer for, like, the fifth time.

NICOLE: The James Bond theme music always gets me so excited.

CHRISTINA: What? I was bored watching this trailer. It looks like every other action film. The only thing that caught my interest was how handsome Ben Whishaw is.

NICOLE: Daniel Craig, can I get a heck yes? He’s glorious. He’s the right amount of tough, the right amount of suave, the right amount of handsome — just kidding, he’s super handsome. This makes me want to go back and rewatch all of his greats: Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace and Skyfall. But mostly Skyfall.

CHRISTINA: I feel like I am missing out on some big cultural thing by having never seen a James Bond film — but this trailer is not making me want to start now. Maybe if they cast Ben Whishaw as Bond one day I will be more inclined.

PAIGE: I am torn between abject horror that Christina hates everything I love, and yet also a small delight that you also like Ben Whishaw. He is a treasure and not enough people love him.

NICOLE: Ooooh, I like how they made Oberhauser extremely feminine in the vocal area with their choice in actor (Christoph Waltz). It adds to his maniacal villainy.

PAIGE: I was harboring ambitions of watching all the Bond films before Spectre but unfortunately only made it through the Connery era. And while today’s films are a far cry from those campy early days, I think the spirit of the show lives on, more or less. Here’s a guy who is the coolest guy imaginable, who gets the hottest girls and the best tech and always has things work out for him, more or less. That will never not be cool.

CHRISTINA: The idea of James Bond being this perennially cool figure is exactly what makes the concept of this character not seem cool to me. I don’t want to watch someone parade around and have everything work out for him all the time. That does not seem exciting at all.

PAIGE: Well, things don’t really work out for James Bond all the time. He is a master of the pyrrhic victory because things work out, except they also kind of don’t work out, but he’s resilient and inscrutable in either case.

CHRISTINA: OK, that sounds slightly more intriguing …

PAIGE: I’ve already decided that I’m going to see it twice in theaters. It’s already been set in stone. Opening weekend — I’m there. This weekend is going to be like, in the top three weekends of my 2015. TRUE STORY.
