Reboot Looks Like A Bust

‘GHOSTBUSTERS’ TRAILER REVIEW BY METRO CREW

This female-led Ghostbusters reboot has a similar setup as the original 1984 film: A ghost-fighting team (Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones and Kristen Wiig) works to stop paranormal forces from overtaking New York City. This film has drawn a huge amount of criticism — some people are apparently very pissed off that the Ghostbusters are now women — and while we want to like it, we have to admit that the trailer does not look great. With the amount of star power it’s got and under the direction of Paul Fieg (Bridesmaids), this Ghostbusters certainly seems like it should be plenty funny, but we’re skeptical. Ghostbusters opens in wide release July 15.

PAIGE: I haven’t seen the original Ghostbusters. I have no loyalty to that franchise. I have no nostalgia for it. I am as Ghostbusters-free as a person can be. But this movie looks so lame. It’s not funny. The special effects are not that good. It doesn’t even have a cool aesthetic. It just looks kind of run-of-the-mill and boring. I know the track records of everyone involved — great cast, great director. But this trailer does not sell the movie in the slightest. It looks like a children’s movie! At least in terms of sophistication of everything. Even the dialogue kind of falls flat. The comedic beats seem off. Four men could be saying these lines and they would be equally unfunny.

CHRISTINA: People are so angry about this being a movie, but from what I recall, the original Ghostbusters was super campy. Why the anger?

PAIGE: Because they replaced all the men with WIMMIN FOLK.

NICOLE: I had watched part of the ‘80s Ghostbusters movie when I was in elementary school, and I remember being scared during certain points. I think with this movie, children won’t be scared at all. They’ve taken away the scary factor.

JAMES: I’m not sure if it’s because I was a kid when I saw the first Ghostbusters, but despite its comedy, it was still creepy. The hauntings were ominous. And that supernatural New York City was a great setting.

PAIGE: I want to like it, because of all that disproportionate backlash that has been flooding the internet about it, but I really can’t. I just feel … meh about it. It’s such a bad trailer.

CHRISTINA: I also wanted to like this — but unfortunately, it just doesn’t look funny. I’m not sure how much the backlash has been about the fact that they are women — although it probably has something to do with it — because people were pretty excited about the concept until these awful trailers started coming out.

PAIGE: I think it’s safe to say that them being women is a big part of that backlash. There are coordinated campaigns out there on the Internet to hide positive reviews, lower IMDB ratings and generally prove that this movie is The Worst Movie of All Time despite the fact that none of these people have seen it yet.

CHRISTINA: There have probably been complaints about this as well, as there should be: Why can’t the black woman be a scientist, too?

JAMES: Yeah, there have been complaints about that. It’s strange that the entire cast has been overhauled, but they seem to be retracing the plot beats of the original, especially in regard to Leslie Jones’ character.

JAIMIE: I want to watch this even though I don’t really want to watch it. The trailers aren’t super appealing, but I like everyone in the film and the director. I can’t say I’ll be going to the theaters for this one. But … maybe?
