PEACH MELBA
CAFÉ LAUFER
3565 Waialae Ave. #107 Honolulu
Phone number (808) 735-7717
website cafelaufer.com

Café Laufer has an expansive display filled with gargantuan slices of cake to tease you when you walk in. But you’re going to steel yourself to order off the menu, where you will choose Peach Melba as your diabetes-inducer of the night. It’ll look a bit silly at first, but then you will start eating, and you will regret your skepticism. It’s got firm-but-spoonable peach slices doused in raspberry sauce surround by a neat cylinder of Haagen-Dazs ice cream and whipped cream, creating a perfect mixture of sweet, tart and creamy flavors.

SEASONED MAGURO DON
RESTAURANT DO-NE
1614 Kalakaua Ave. Honolulu
Phone number (808) 626-5782
website idilai31.wix.com/do-ne

Donburi restaurants may not sound like scintillating eateries — the one thing you know is that everything will be served in a bowl filled with rice — but Restaurant Do-ne surprises all the same. It’s a teeny-tiny hole-in-the-wall buried on Kalakaua Avenue, so watch for its distinctive blue shade. But the fish is fresh (whether you get an ahi or salmon bowl), Do-ne is generous with the side dishes (including soup, salad and various other tsukemono with every donburi) and, perhaps most importantly, all of that will be under $15. Amazing, right?
